Diabetes Specialty Care

This full day class will allow you to discover how diabetes affects your clients within the long-term care population and how to best care for this population. You will be required to pass a written examination to receive credit for
this course.

The target audience of this class includes caregivers and healthcare providers who will be working with clients with dementia in a long-term care environment.

Key learning objectives includes:

  1. Define types of diabetes and identify signs and risk factors associated with diabetes.

  2. Recognize methods to prevent or delay diabetes.

  3. Identify various challenges of living with diabetes.

  4. Recognize and identify strategies to provide person-centered care for individuals with diabetes.

  5. Identify possible medication side effects, ways to respond to side effects and recognize non-drug therapies to reduce some symptoms of diabetes.

  6. Understand and communicate about a nutrition plan.

  7. Demonstrate an ability to recognize communication styles and ways to communicate effectively.

  8. Recognize that past traumas can affect current thinking, behaviors and actions and will identify strategies to provide trauma informed care.

  9. Demonstrate a sequence of steps to approach challenging behaviors to recognize changes in behavior, mood and cognition.

  10. Recognize the importance of caregiver wellness and identify strategies to prevent secondary trauma  and burnout.

  11. Communicate the importance of self-care for the individual with diabetes.


This course is 8 hours long.

This course is WA DSHS approved for class credit and is recommended to work with diabetes in long-term care populations. Credits can be used for Continuing Education or Population-Specific hours.
This course will be taught online via Zoom and followed by the examination. The examination is given via Zoom. 
A Zoom confirmation link will be sent to you via email prior to the day of class. Class participation is required.
Certificate of completion will be given to you following successful completion of the examination after class.

Must pick up book prior to class—this is required for class participation.
Payment via check, cash or Venmo prior to class. There is a non-refundable $25 fee for cancellations made prior to 2 days of the class.
